A MOTHER’S EXPERIENCE OF HER CHILD’S CANCER

Résumé
La découverte d’une pathologie cancéreuse chez l’enfant ne laisse jamais sa famille indifférente. Elle
bouleverse tous les repères psychiques, organisationnels et temporels mis en place par les parents. Cette
analyse de cas illustre l’expérience émotionnelle et psychologique d’une mère confrontée au cancer de son
enfant, à l’inefficacité des soins et à la perte tragique de celui-ci. Nous avons porté notre regard sur l’unité
d’oncologie pédiatrique du CHU de Treichville, où cet enfant a été admis. La présente étude nous a permis
d’approfondir nos connaissances en faisant ressortir le processus du deuil vécu par cette mère, allant de
l’annonce de l’échec thérapeutique jusqu’au décès de son fils. Sur le plan méthodologique, nous avons
mené un entretien semi-directif avec cette maman. Nous lui avons également fait passer le test de
Rorschach. Les données recueillies ont été présentées sous forme d’étude de cas, visant la compréhension
approfondie du vécu de la mère. Les résultats mettent en évidence une détresse émotionnelle à l’annonce
du diagnostic qui s’apaisera à l’entame du projet thérapeutique de l’enfant. Toutefois, cette détresse resurgi
ra lors de l’annonce de l’impossibilité thérapeutique, puis se manifestera de façon plus intense au moment
du décès de cet enfant. Les résultats révèlent également une profonde culpabilité chez la mère, qu’elle
s’efforce de compenser par un rituel de repentance après l’inhumation de l’enfant.

Abstract
The discovery of cancer in a child never leaves the family indifferent. It upsets all the psychic, organizatio
nal and temporal reference points put in place by the parents. This case study illustrates the emotional and
psychological experience of a mother confronted with her child’s cancer, ineffective care and tragic loss.
We focused on the pediatric oncology unit at Treichville University Hospital, where this child was
admitted. This study has enabled us to deepen our knowledge by highlighting the grieving process
experienced by this mother, from the announcement of the therapeutic failure to the death of her son.
Methodologically, we conducted a semi-directive interview with this mother. We also administered the
Rorschach test. The data collected were presented in the form of a case study, with the aim of gaining an
in-depth understanding of the mother’s experiences. The results revealed emotional distress at the announ
cement of the diagnosis, which subsided when the child’s therapeutic project began. However, this distress
resurfaced when it was announced that treatment was impossible and became more intense at the time of
the child’s death. The results also reveal a deep sense of guilt on the part of the mother, which she strives to
compensate for with a ritual of repentance after the child’s burial.
